On the Road, part 4: California

Truckee River

Truckee River, our first stop in California

The drive through Nevada was pretty uneventful; think 8 hours of driving through never-ending, monotonous rocks. But, our perseverance was rewarded upon arrival to the California state line. Almost immediately, the Sierra Nevada mountains greet you and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking: mountains, rivers, pines, and gorgeous sunlight.

We used AirBnB to find a place to stay in Truckee, a little resort town close to Lake Tahoe. It ended up being much more affordable than the standard chain hotels in the area, plus we stayed on a property with chickens, turkeys, a little greenhouse, beautiful gardens, apple trees, and two roaming dogs. Our breakfast on Sunday morning (9/9) was a delicious loaf of sourdough bread, fresh-from-the-coop boiled eggs, and the sweetest plums you can imagine.

The house we stayed in was right on the edge of a hill/mountain and there was a little snaking path that led you down to the Truckee River that ran beneath. We had a great walk along the water, exploring the area and enjoying the beautiful sights and smells.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe

Before we set off on the final leg of our journey, we made a quick stop at Kings Beach on Lake Tahoe to test out the chilly waters.

The lake is really beautiful and as clear and you can imagine. It’s also quite frigid, but our summer training at Barton Springs (a naturally spring-fed pool in Austin that stays at 68F year round) was not in vain; the waters at Tahoe didn’t seem too bad at all in comparison. Of course, princess Lina much preferred hanging out in the sand over being carried in the waters.

She even let us bury her legs without a concern in the world. If this trip across the country has taught us anything, it’s how much she loves the sand.

After Tahoe, we made the trek across California with our sights set on the coast. We drove through San Francisco and made a stop at Baker Beach to dip our toes in the Pacific Ocean and view the Golden Gate bridge. It was beautiful and exhilarating. Can’t wait to be back!
